The IMDb top movies that I haven’t watched

I’ve rated 1,455 movies on IMDb as of this post. IMDb keeps track of the top 250 movies for each year, starting with 1996. So you can look at each list and see how many of the 250 movies in that list you’ve watched.

For 1996, I’ve watched 48 out of the top 100, 88 out of 250 titles. In 1996, there wouldn’t have been very many people rating the movies, which is why the top movies on that list, that I haven’t seen, are number #5 and #6 and are both Wallace & Gromit claymation short films. There are some other really terrible titles on that list like #146 Tom and Huck.

For 1997, I’ve watched 45 out of the top 100, 94 out of 250 titles. The top movies that I haven’t seen is #5 Casablanca, followed by #6 Citizen Kane.

For 1998, I’ve watched 51 out of the top 100, 96 out of 250 titles. The top movies I haven’t watched are #6 Casablanca, followed by #6 Citizen Kane.

For 1999, I’ve watched 43 out of the top 100, 93 out of 250 titles. Top movies I haven’t seen are still #5 Casablanca and #6 Citizen Kane.

For 2000, I’ve watched 48 out of the top 100, 97 out of 250 titles. #4 Citizen Kane, #5 Casablanca.

For 2001, I’ve watched 51 out of the top 100, 104 out of 250 titles. #5 Citizen Kane, #7 Casablanca.

For 2002, I’ve watched 54 out of the top 100, 107 out of 250 titles. #5 Citizen Kane, #7 Casablanca.

For 2003, I’ve watched 53 out of the top 100, 112 out of 250 titles. Top movies I haven’t seen are #6 Casablanca, #9 Seven Samurai. Citizen Kane got pushed further down, dang!

For 2004, I’ve watched 55 out of the top 100, 105 out of 250 titles. Top movies I haven’t seen are #5 Seven Samurai and #7 Casablanca

For 2005, I’ve watched 58 out of the top 100, 113 out of 250 titles. #5 Seven Samurai, #7 Casablanca.

For 2006, I’ve watched 58 out of the top 100, 112 out of 250 titles. Top movies I haven’t seen are #5 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and #6 Casablanca.

For 2007, I’ve watched 55 out of the top 100, 120 out of 250 titles. 48%. Top movies I haven’t seen are #4 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and #9 Casablanca.

For 2008, I’ve watched 58 out of the top 100, 122 out of 250 titles. 48.8%. Top movies I haven’t seen are #5 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and #10 12 Angry Men.

For 2009, I’ve watched 60 out of the top 100, 134 out of 250 titles. Finally passed the 50% mark, with 53.6% watched. Top movies I haven’t seen #4 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and #8 12 Angry Men.

For 2010, I’ve watched 61 out of the top 100, 131 out of 250 titles. #4 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and #8 12 Angry Men.

For 2011, I’ve watched 61 out of the top 100, 133 out of 250 titles. #4 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and #6 12 Angry Men.

For 2012, I’ve watched 61 out of the top 100, 135 out of 250 titles. #5 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and #6 12 Angry Men.

For 2013, I’ve watched 59 out of the top 100, 129 out of 250 titles. #5 The Good… so tired of typing the title of that movie and #7 12 Angry Men.

For 2014, I’ve watched 60 out of the top 100, 129 out of 250 titles. #6 The Good whatever and #7 12 Angry Men.

For 2015, I’ve watched 62 out of the top 100, 135 out of 250 titles. Top movies I haven’t seen are #5 12 Angry Men, and #8 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

For 2016, I’ve watched 136 out of 250 titles. These results aren’t official, because the 2016 list will fluctuate for the entire year, and some new, popular movies will displace older ones.

By my super-duper calculations (excluding the not complete year of 2016), I’ve completed 2,289 titles out of the 5,000 titles on the top 250 lists, or about 46%. Out of the top 100 movies for those 20 years, I’ve completed 1,101 titles out of 2,000 titles, which is a tiny bit over 55% Of course, the majority of these titles overlap years. But it’s safe to say that my progress is at 55%/46%.

I’m going to try to watch a movie a week. I’ll alternate the top 250 lists, going with a different year every time, and just select the top ranked movie that I haven’t seen from that list. Safe to say that I’m starting with Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and 12 Angry Men.

There’s some Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, and lots of classic films that I’ve heard of, such as Singin’ in the Rain, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, On the Waterfront, and To Kill a Mockingbird. And there is plenty of newer stuff too. Yeah, I’ve never seen Avatar or Lost in Translation. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. Terminator 1 or 2, or Rocky.

Will plan to update on my progress in 6 months or so. I added it to my calendar so I remember.

English translation of “El Baile De Los Que Sobran”

This is how I would translate the song El Baile De Los Que Sobran from Los Prisioneros. YouTube video of the song. I found a few translations in English, and some weren’t very good. This might be more of an interpretation, then a literal translation.

First, the title: The Dance of the Leftovers

It’s another night, of walking.
Another month ends, with nothing new.

My friends stayed, just like you.
This year, the games have ended. The 12 games.

Join the dance of the leftovers
Nobody is going to miss us.
Nobody really wanted to help us.

They told us when we were young,
Play at studying.
Men are brothers, and together they must work.
You heard the advice,
Your eyes on your professor.
There was so much sunshine over your heads
And it wasn’t so true
Because those games in the end,
for some, ended in laurels and a future,
And left my friends kicking rocks.

Join the dance of the leftovers
Nobody is going to miss us.
Nobody really wanted to help us.

Hey, I know some stories, about the future
Hey, when I learned them, the times were the safest

Under the shoes, mud and cement
The future is none
Of the promised in the 12 games
Others were taught, secrets that you weren’t
Others trusted that thing called education
They asked for effort, they asked for dedication
And for what?
To end up dancing, and kicking rocks.

Hey, I know some stories, about the future
Hey, when I learned them, the times were the safest

Join the dance of the leftovers
Nobody is going to miss us.
Nobody really wanted to help us.

2016 Resolutions: April Fail

What happened to April!? The weather in Rancagua is starting to not be so nice.

Let’s see how I did on my resolutions (spoiler: bad).

  • Guitar
Barely picked it up. Now that I’ve forgotten how to play (mild exaggeration), I’m ready to pick it up again, and relearn everything. This time, with a trusty metronome right in the mix of things so I can learn rhythm.
  • Write more
I did write some more. Not fiction, but I do have some drafts of things. We’ll see if they ever see the light of day.
  • Skype
Yes! I managed to Skype again, and tentatively made Skype plans with other people that haven’t happened yet. The Skyping is important for Grace.
  • Read
I actually read a few books in April, including Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble, Making Simple Automata, and The Idea Machine. I need some more fiction in my queue.
  • Watch less
I probably watched less. Although Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley and Veep started up last Sunday so..
  • Exercise
I’ve realized the importance of this, which counts for something, right? Especially since we’d like to take a short vacation down south, in the near future, and being fat and unable to hike much definitely limits what you can do.

I updated what I’m doing now.
